OPPO introduces new rolling display smartphone.
OPPO recently introduced a smartphone prototype with rolling display that can be used as a regular smartphone and when needed, it can roll into a tablet sized smartphone like the galaxy fold. This rolling display technology is in its early stages but it could solve all the problems of a folding phone like the Samsung galaxy fold series. Rolling displays could eliminate the crease found on folding ones forever and provide a much better viewing experience.
But the bigger problem rolling display smartphones could solve is having to need two displays, they suck more power and reduces the manufacturers resources. Having just a single display that rolls into a bigger one is very easy compared to opening and closing the hinge which leads us to the other problem, the hinge itself.
Hinges are very fragile and a drop from a decent height could damage your very expensive foldable phone. The thickness of a rolling display phone also will be half compared to a foldable. As mass productions of these rolling displays occur, these smartphones are likely to come cheaper than foldables, and wallet friendly for common public. Other than OPPO, LG and Samsung is also working on this tech but is yet to release a prototype.
