Qualcomm launches new SD 888 SoC for 2021 flagships


Qualcomm debuts their new SD 888 for 2021 flagships through a virtual keynote on 2 Dec. Its the successor of the SD865 SoC and was speculated to be named as the SD 875 up until the keynote.
The new SoC has significant improvements over last years SD 865.

The new chip has the X60 5g modem built-in rather as a separate unit like last year and will support both sub6 waves and mmWaves of 5g. The new chip also has a new ISP for improved camera performance and computational photography. The next-Gen spectra ISP is capable of capturing photos and videos upto 2.7 gigapixels per second. That is 120 shots of 12 megapixel images per second and is 35% faster than last year.

For gamers, Qualcomm's third-gen elite gaming engine is capable of desktop forwarding , framerates upto 144 fps and has updatable GPU drivers. The SD888 SoC has a sixth-gen Ai engine which comes with a redesigned hexagon processor to deliver new Ai performance.

Oem's like OnePlus, Asus, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Motorola, Realme etc are expected to introduce their 2021 flagships with the new SD 888.

Qualcomm explains how its SD 888 SoC will be  a huge leap for phone cameras. The recently announced 888 chipset has a triple image signal processor(ISP), which allows it to capture three camera streams from different vantage points and stitch them together to create the best overall output possible. The spectra 580 ISP supports the newest sensor technology called staggered HDR for computational videography. The ISP can capture 2.7 gigapixel per second allowing is to snap 120 12mega pixel pictures per second. A triple ISP also allows smooth transitioning of lenses while recording video. When it comes to over-hear noise cancelling headphones, Sony leaded the industry with their wh1000 series. And now, the competition just got more stiffer as Apple introduced the Airpods Max. The latest and greatest noise cancelling king the wh1000-xm4 costs $350, but can be available for around $300, but Apple just dropped the Airpods Max with a price tag of $550, which got people thinking about it. Lets compare them to see that if Sony will remain the king or does Apple take the crown? Apple AirPods Max takes it from Sony in terms of build quality. Google and Qualcomm collaborate to bring 4 years of software update in android phones.

Qualcomm and Google announced their collaboration to simplify and bring 4 years of Android updates to smartphones powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. Under Project Treble devices running on Snapdragon chipsets (from SD888 onwards) will receive security updates and new android versions for the next four years.  Project Treble will enable OEMs to upgrade their devices to the latest Android versions without worrying about Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset specific software. This is a huge leap in terms of android updates which is not always guaranteed in the Android world. OnePlus provides android updates to their devices for 3 years and recently Samsung also started providing 3 years of updates for their flagship devices. This will be divert some Apple customers into Android space because from the coming year Android smartphones with Snapdragon chipsets will be getting long term software support just like iPhones and increase the longevity of Android smartphones from 1-2 years to 4+...
