Samsung received a lot of hate due to the performance disparity between last year's Exynos 990 and the Snapdragon 865 which were used in Samsung flagships. The Exynos not only lacked performance in CPU and GPU department, but also was not power efficient and had thermal issues compared to the Snapdragon 865. Even the Snapdragon model clicked better pictures due to its better Image Signal Processor (ISP).

Samsung has listened to our complaints last year and has introduced the new Exynos 2100 this year in their S21 series. The chip has the same cores and core configuration as the Snapdragon 888, but all the cores are clocked at higher frequencies than the 888. They are using the latest Mali G78 GPU from ARM for graphics processing.

In an in-depth testing of both the Snapdragon and Exynos models of the S21 ultra by Gary from SpeedTestG, the results were quite interesting. The Exynos 2100 wins in terms of CPU performance and the reason could be the higher clock speeds compared to the 888. But in mixed GPU and CPU performance the Mali G78 could only grab 27 fps while the Snapdragon model managed 35 fps.

This continues as the Adreno 660 GPU in the Snapdragon 888 overtakes the Exynos 2100 in the GPU test by 7 seconds to complete the test faster than the Exynos 2100 model. The Snapdragon managed to complete the CPU test in 34.7s, mixed CPU and GPU tests in 18.1s and the GPU test 26.1 seconds bringing its total time to 1min and 19 s.

The Exynos on the other hand completed the CPU test in 33.4s, mixed in 20.1s and GPU test in 33.6s. These results clearly shows that the Mali G78 is not as powerful compared to the Adreno 660.
